Food For Thought Dairy Products and Acne
A study that appeared in the Journal of the American Academy
of Dermatology this year showed that foods such as milk,
instant breakfast drinks, cream cheese, and cottage cheese
are associated with higher incidences of adolescent acne.
This recent historical study also found that skim milk was
associated with a higher incidence of teenage acne than
whole milk. The authors hypothesized that the hormonal content
of milk may be responsible-not the fat content. Milk contains
estrogen, progesterone and androgen precursors, which have
also been implicated in acne. Previous studies of hormonal
levels in milk have focused on progesterone, and little
has been studied about androgens, although it is known that
during the fermentation process for cheese products, additional
testosterone production from precursors like androstenedione
and estrone occur.
