What
is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a highly dilute derivate of Botulinum Toxin Type
A. Botox causes relaxation of muscles that are the cause of
certain lines and wrinkles of the face. A recent review of 20
years of medical data showed the use of BOTOX® to be extremely
safe.
How does BOTOX® relax facial wrinkles?
Muscles receive electrical messages from your brain, which cause
your muscles to contract. These electrical messages are transmitted
to the muscle by a substance called acetycholine. BOTOX®
blocks the transmission of acetylcholine, and as a result the
muscle does not receive the message, therefore the muscle is
unable to contract. When this occurs the line that was caused
by the contracting muscle is gone.
How long does BOTOX® last?
The effect of BOTOX® are noted
within 24-72 hours after injection. However, full effect is not
evident until 1- 2 weeks after injection. The effects wars off
in 3-4 months; and with it a return of the wrinkles. Most clients
require 3-4 injections per year to maintain the desired effect.
How long can I be treated with BOTOX®
?
Many people have used BOTOX® for
years with no adverse consequences. Occasionally, a diminished
response over time can occur. This is most often due to antibody
formation to the botulinum toxin. Though not harmful, it is not
reversible.
What areas of the body can be treated
with BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been safely
and effectively used to treat: glabellar frown lines, crows feet,
forehead lines, marionette lines, vertical lip lines, mental crease
and dimpling of the chin and platysmal bands in the neck region.
Is there anyone who should not receive
BOTOX® injections?
People who are not good candidates for BOTOX®
include: pregnant or nursing women: those who have had an allergic
reaction to Botulinum Toxin Type A; those who have a history of
botulism poisoning; and people who have Eaton-Lambert syndrome
or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s).
Are there any side affects?
Some people report minor, temporary discomfort from the injection.
Occasionally, there may be minimal bruising, redness and/or swelling
seen at the site of the injection. These side effects are mild
and typically resolve in 3-5 days.
Is there aftercare involved with BOTOX®
injections?
Application of a cool pack to the area of the injection can reduce
swelling and minimize bruising.
