Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is an innovative treatment for sun-damaged
skin. After 4-6 treatments the signs of sun damage will lessen,
leaving radient, heatlhy looking skin.
What areas can be treated?
Virtually any part of your body with sun and age spots or freckles
can be safely treated. The face, chest, shoulders, and arms
are the most popular areas for treatment because they have typically
had the most sun exposure. Both discrete spots and skin densely
covered with freckles respond well to treatment.
What does the treatment do?
The visible light delivered by the IPL procedure is selectively
absorbed by the pigmented spots on your skin. It’s the
heating of the pigment cells that causes the clearing of sun
and age spots. (IPL also can help smooth fine lines by stimulating
collagen production in teh dermal layer of the skin. The IPL
gently warms the dermis without harming the top layer of the
skin (epidermis). This warming action stimulates fibroblasts
with the dermis to begin producing collagen fibers.
What do the treatments feel like?
When the handpiece is placed on your skin, it will feel cool
and comfortable. When the pulse of light is delivered, you may
feel a mild, brief pinching or stinging sensation. A brief application
of an ice pack before the procedure can eliminate any discomfort
experienced with the IPL.
How long will the treatments take?
The actual treatment will only take a few minutes, and can easily
fit into your lunch hour.
What happens after the treatment? What are the side
effects?
Immediately following the treatment, the spots may start to
darken. You may notice a slight reddening of the surrounding
skin. This typically subsides within a couple of hours. Over
the course of the next one to three weeks, darkened spots will
fade and flake off.
Will the spots reappear over time?
To maintain your results and prevent new spots from forming
we recommend continuing the corrective and preventive treatment
process at home with daily use of Skinceuticals C+ AHA, and
Physical UV Defense Sunblock 30spf, Phyo +. We also strongly
recommend a maintenance microdermabrasion and chemical peel
3-4 months.
